January 2025 Bird Flu Update: With avian influenza now endemic in wild bird populations in Vermont, and with several recent outbreaks of bird flu in domesticated birds in the state, we are monitoring our flocks daily for signs of infection. We have protocols in place to protect our crew members and farm visitors, our eggs and chicken are safe for consumption, and we are keeping up with the latest guidance from state and federal agencies.
We hope and believe that relatively small and isolated flocks such as ours will be an important part of keeping our communities fed as we navigate this potential pandemic. There’s inherent safety in distributed production. Which is to say, small farms are the key to not having all of our proverbial eggs in the same industrial basket.
Sunrise Eggs
Our beautiful red laying hens live out on pasture. They supplement their diet with seeds, bugs, and even the occasional frog. They lay eggs in the morning and roost at night in our mobile chicken coop. These are the best eggs you'll ever taste, with yolks so orange they're almost red. Eggs are sold on CSA pickup days for $6.00 a dozen.
Mobile Coop
The mobile chicken coop was built to increase the efficiency of our pasture management. It holds 300 gallons of water, so our days of hauling water to the farthest reaches of pasture are over.
Room to Roam
While we do set up temporary paddocks for the hens using electric net fencing, they are moved every few days and have plenty of room to safely roam.
